2018 Club Report

 

THEATRE:

Our corresponding secretary Andi Meyer performed in the play, Vietgone at the Uniform Theater. The original play is the play writer’s parents escape from Vietnam and their experience in coming to America.

 

Andi attended the Asian American Theater Conference in Chicago this week. Tammy Hailiʻopua, Professor of Hawaiian Theatre at U O H is invited to speak.

 

Upon her return from Chicago, she reported on the news and reaction to the moʻolelo Hawaii offerings at the conference, and also the Aloha Poke march in Chicago which she participated in.

 

NAVIGATION:

Irene Kimsey, recording secretary present a guide using Ancient Navigational tools as a daily resource for today’s wayfaring.

 

HULA:

Lei Kalewa Hula Workshop presented in May as a part of her final kumu requirements. She offered classes in oli, ʻauana and kahiko. Kuana Torres returned for his third year workshops July 27-29. About 50 attended.

 

FUND RAISER

The hui represented HAWAII at the Ethnic festival Aug. 17-19 selling shave ice which included a stage performance to close the event on Friday evening. Pelekikena Dorinda was thrilled to perform a hula with three of her moʻopuna.

PEARL HARBOR VISIT

 

Pelekikena Dorinda attended her high school reunion in June and made appearances with the American Girl doll, Nanea at the dockside event on June 15th at the USS Battleship Missouri.

 

FUTURE MEETINGS

Alohi Bikle with Papa Ola Lokahi will come September 22nd to our small hui with a lei poʻo class. So excited and honored.  Looking forward to attending convention in November.
